Bird Brain Chronicles, Bird pics and story

January 5 – On The Road to Hallettsville

What a day today! I volunteer at a food pantry and finished my work there. Then, I picked up Lucy and we drove to Hallettsville so that she could get measured for a dress for our daughter’s upcoming wedding. We have a friend who makes dresses and costumes, and Lucy, since her double mastectomy, doesn’t have normal female contours which makes it difficult for her to buy an off the rack dress and feel good about it. So, we took a day trip to Hallettsville to work with Lindsay Ferguson and see Nick, the pastor of First Baptist Church in Hallettsville and our former youth pastor. It was good to catch up with them. As we arrived, there was a turkey vulture high in the sky. I took a quick shot. The focus isn’t very good, but it was the first bird we saw there.

Turkey vultures are majestic birds in flight and you can see them soaring in the skies over South Texas. If you see them from afar, they look gorgeous as they ride the thermals. They have a cut little red spot in the front. Then when you see them up close, you realize that the red spot is his head and they are the ugliest birds in the world. They often cooperate with Cara Cara as they scavenge the road kill, and Cara Cara (we saw a couple while driving) are the most beautiful birds around.  Then we visited with the Fergusons. When we left, they gave us directions to the park so that we could search for birds.

When we arrived at the park we were immediately struck by the lack of birds. There were no sounds. There was no movement. After a few minutes of looking around I heard a bird singing in the distance and looked in that direction. What I saw instead was this fuzzy-tailed seed stealer. (So named when we were feeding birds in our backyard and his relatives would barge into the chow line and chase the invited guests away and eat their food.) They are cute, though, so I take their picture whenever I can.

Often, when looking for birds, knots in the wood, seed pods, and items like this pic fool us into thinking they’re birds. Sadly, plastic bags arranged the right way on branches do the same thing. It is a nice example of a wasp’s nest. Seriously, in the park, while we heard distant singing, the only indication of birds in the park that I saw was one nest in the trees. I was disappointed, but we left by a road that Lucy thought she saw on the map that ran by the river, so we decided to try that route. It’s so nice to have a wife that puts up with my follies!

There weren’t many birds to see on this route and then I spied this cardinal. I thought I had seen one earlier in the year at the Oso Bay wetlands, but he snuck into the trees and I didn’t get a picture. Lucy stopped the car and I rolled down my window to take the shot. My first attempt happened when I snapped just as the cardinal jumped up. I have a few of the tail feathers in the shot. Then, we moved a bit and I got this shot. I love cardinals, unless they’re playing baseball, and I was thrilled to get the shot.

Then, we took the paved road instead of the dirt road because that seemed like the logical choice. We meandered down the road until we saw this little beauty. It’s an American Kestrel. The angle was bad in the car. The first picture was right into the sun and was a complete washout. We moved the car a little, but it was still an awkward angle and it was a bit blurry. But, it was an American Kestrel!  We made one more stop by the Victoria County Courthouse and on our way back to the car after seeing nothing. Then we saw what I think were sparrows, but didn’t get a shot. The featured image for this post is the Courthouse. While we didn’t have a good day birding, it was great to see the Fergusons and spend time with my wife.

April 21 – Catching Up With College Friends

No, I didn’t post last night. No, it wasn’t because I was celebrating, nor was I even observing 4/20 at all. A good friend from college and his wife came to town. Last night we stayed at our table after supper talking a long time. a LONG time. We were at a new restaurant in Corpus Christi called Shabu Shabu. This may be the only place I’ve ever been to eat that required instructions on how to eat their food. Patrons actually do the cooking at the table. It was fun. We’d probably have more fun if we knew what we were doing. I got home so tired that I couldn’t write my Challenge words, let alone a post last night, so I took the night off. I worked the food pantry this morning, stopped in at a chess tournament to check on my kids and then went to see my friend at work. He’s an officer of a tugboat company and they were having an open house. He invited my wife and me to go with them. So, we got a chance to tour a tugboat. (In the picture below, I’m not really skippering the tugboat, just sitting in that chair.)

When I got home, I was able to get my challenge writing done. Yesterday I was trying to think about how to deal with some criticism (asked for) on part of the story I’m working on now. I thought I had a great idea for a catch. I thought the criticism I got was because this younger generation, both critics actually, didn’t understand what I was doing. When I sent a video link to my most recent critic (again, I solicited this criticism) she pointed out why my idea didn’t work. I grumbled for about ten minutes because she was right. Then, I began thinking of ways to redo the problem. My cousin’s wife even helped by giving me some info about the area where she lives.

Oh, I did write devotionals for those two days.

Yesterday’s devotional – April 20 – Learning to Rejoice in God’s Forgiveness … For Others

Today’s devotional – April 21 – You Get to Choose Your Reward!

April 7 – Scattered Priorities

Today was a day I touched on all the different areas that are important to me…well…except for one or two…. I began the day by working at a food pantry. I left the house before I did my devotional, so today’s devotional was late getting posted. At the food pantry I either help prepare bags of breakfast meat or do that and lead a devotional today. Today, someone from the church that does the pantry led it. I prefer that because it comes closer to where the people are. The cold (yes, I said the cold in South Texas in April) may have kept our numbers down lower than normal. I got home and worked through my devotional. Sometimes I struggle, like today, because the “through the Bible” program I’m using this year doesn’t jump around…so I’m getting all the gospels at the beginning of the year. I feel like I’m reading and writing about what I wrote about last month. In the middle of today’s writing, it was off to get coffee for my wife. I didn’t get it after the food pantry like I normally do because the local convenience stores were selling commemorative Selena cups. I couldn’t find a parking place, let alone imagine standing in line for that long for coffee!

Lunch today was targeted buying. A local 12-Step group with a strong Christian emphasis had a barbecue to raise funds. I’ve had many friends and family members who were friends of Bill W, and I appreciate this particular organization also. We ate barbecue for lunch! Then, it was off to our writers’ meeting – the first Saturday of the month. The only other person there today was the other leader. We talked for a while, then broke things up early. He always teaches me something when we talk! Then it was time to come home, and I tried to write, but I couldn’t keep my eyes open…so a quick nap. Errands, supper, and finally some editing happened after the nap. While editing, I realized that I had skipped a day of my devotionals. So, to finish that month off, I need to write a new one. Ah, this is the life!

Today’s devotional (543 Words) – April 7 – Let It Go….Let It Go (Yes, I did go there!)

Reading today – with everything else going on – it didn’t happen.
