April 23 – Another Day, Another Book Cover, Moving Along

Today was a busy day. You’d think a guy could take it easy when he gains a year, but nope, still a busy day. Devotional was written, then after making arrangements and acknowledging birthday wishes on Facebook, I went to do laundry. I did about half of my writing challenge there while waiting for laundry to finish. (We have an issue with our washing machine and dryer now, so everything’s at the laundromat.) Then, lunch, a bit of work around the house, reviewing the covers for my edited devotional books (!!!), and on to chess clubs. After that, I had a fundraising banquet to attend. No, I didn’t fall for a trap pitch. I knew what it was going into it. This was to support Baptist Student work in Texas. Back when I was in college (TCU) it was called Baptist Student Union. It was there that I met Jesus Christ and gave my life to Him. It was there I met my wife. I owe that ministry for some wonderful things in my life. I’m happy to help support their work. When I got home, I finished my writing challenge. I’m completely reworking my short story involving time travel.

April 16 – Working Overtime

Ok, I didn’t REALLY work overtime. It was nice to have time that I could focus on my editing. I wrote my devotional this morning – 494 Words and then went to work on a course I’m taking in descriptive writing from Kelly Blanchard-Dale. Even old folks like me can learn from young folks like her. This week’s focus is on active voice, as opposed to passive voice. The writing sample I looked at made me realize that I use the passive voice more than I thought. I did a little bit of housework after that and then went back to editing the devotional book. I got 15 days worth done. I hope to finish June tomorrow and begin the final process of sending it to the publisher. I had chess clubs today and then cooked dinner in the middle of the editing times.

April 9 – Staying Focused

I think the title is more admonition than testimony. After the devotional, I had a hard time staying focused. I wrote the rest of the devotional I’d skipped that day, that year. I only needed 200 words, but it took a lot longer. I spent a lot of time networking and sharing information with other authors. There are a lot of new books that have just come out or will be coming out soon. Then I began editing, but was very restless as I tried to work. I took a power nap. I couldn’t stay focused. I went to chess clubs and worked with them, then stopped at the grocery store before heading home. I had to pick up some medicine for my daughter. She had ordered it last night with a delivery time around 2. I got there around 6, and it wasn’t ready. 30 minute wait because….well…because. Then tonight, I kept trying to stay awake to write….finally gave up after four days of edited material.

April 2 – I Was Sure I Had Written This Last Night

I woke up this morning and wondered…did I write this post last night? I checked…nope. Getting more forgetful in my old age. Anyway, I finished my devotional (433 words) and editing early in the day. After that I did a lot of walking. That’s my major form of exercise. Then, I had both chess clubs – an elementary school and a middle school. The elementary school feeds into that middle school, which is the school I retired from. After that, I came home long enough to let the dog out and then went with my pastor to help him in ministry. He preaches and feeds people at a homeless shelter the first Monday of every month. He believes he needs to do ministry outside of his church duties and this is one way he does that. I’m privileged to work with him. Then, I got home, cooked dinner, and yes, that means we ate late. Somehow, after dinner, I should have written this and forgot. Oh well.

April 2 devotional – 433 words: April 2 – Coming Back to Life

Editing: up to June 18 (6 days worth…or wait..8 days?)

Today’s plan – write devotional, laundry, grocery shopping, editing, chess lesson, dinner with my wife. Life is good!

March 18 – Sunday Writing

It’s always difficult to find time to write on Sundays. We leave the house by 7:45 AM to go to church. We have duties, usually, in both the 8:30 and the 11:00 worship services. We have Sunday School at 9:45. So we’re there from 7:45 til about 12:15, depending on how long we talk afterwards. I come home, fix lunch, and then I do a Bible Study at a nursing home from 2:00 to 2:30. Today, we had a meeting about security at our church at 4:00 that lasted til about 5:20, then I had to shop and get food for the next few days. I came home, fixed supper, ate, and then got to do my story writing. Today I finished my devotional before church.

Some Christian writers I know take Sunday’s off from writing to get a full day of rest. Sundays are a day of service for me anyway.

So, today’s writing: March 18 – What Does It Take To Believe? 473 words. Then, 481 words on my back story. I had fun using a Mary Poppins reference in a story set in 2035.

Tomorrow – Lucy plans on driving herself to work, so I should be able to spend most of the morning writing. I have chess clubs to work with from 2:30 – 5:30 (driving time included.) We’ll see what else I can get done.
